The new research proposal of Tessera Multimedia for the development of intelligent software for on-call duties and work shifts has been approved for funding.

For the second time, Tessera secures funding under the “Research-Innovate” Action within the framework of the “Competitiveness 2021-2027” programme. The new project entitled “Smart Software for the Optimization of On-Call Duties and Work Shifts through Advanced Algorithms and Big Data Analytics”, with the acronym “SmartShift“, has been approved and is moving into the implementation phase.

At the same time, our previous project under the “Research–Innovate” Action, entitled ‘Innovative Digital System for Hypoglycemia Prediction and Diabetes Self-Management Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies,’ has been under implementation since July 2025.

SmartShift (project code EKPAR01-0061633) has a duration of 24 months and concerns the development of a modern solution for scheduling on-call and shift, designed to meet the needs of organizations and businesses operating with shift-based systems.

The platform will include a web application, a stand-alone desktop application and an intelligent virtual assistant (chatbot). It is addressed to businesses and organizations operating with rotating schedules and/or 24/7, where continuous staffing and uninterrupted operation are required, such as indicatively:

  • Hospitals, clinics and healthcare units
  • Pharmacies and Pharmaceutical Associations
  • Industries and factories
  • Logistics companies, warehouses and distribution centers
  • Retail chains and supermarkets
  • Hotel and hospitality businesses

Similar need arise in call centers, security or emergency services, as well as in any large organization with multiple shifts and locations. In other words, our solution concerns any environment where the proper allocation of human resources per hour and per day is critical for its safe and efficient operation.

With the new system, we aim for a substantial upgrade of the scheduling process, offering:

  • Faster and more simple shift calculation
  • Improved citizen service through the virtual assistant
  • A fair and balanced schedule for employees
  • A user-friendly and efficient management environment for administration

The development of SmartShift will leverage advanced optimization algorithms, Big Data technologies, and AI / Machine Learning tools, enabling the system to dynamically adapt to changing needs and conditions.

The goal behind Tessera’s innovation is to create intelligent software that solves real-world challenges for organizations and businesses and contributes to the modernization of their operations.

The Action falls under Priority 1 “Strengthening Research and Innovation” of the “Competitiveness” Programme and, more specifically, under the Specific Objective “Development and strengthening of research and innovation capacities and the uptake of advanced technologies (ERDF)”, and is implemented by the Special Managing Authority for Actions in the fields of Research and Innovation (EYDE EK).

The project “Smart Software for the Optimization of On-Call Duties and Work Shifts through Advanced Algorithms and Big Data Analytics” is implemented under the “Research – Create – Innovate” Action and is co-funded by Greece and the European Union (European Regional Development Fund – ERDF) through the NSRF 2021–2027.
